Greta Thunberg: The Swedish Climate Activist
Editorials News | Oct-29-2019
The Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg has become popular globally for her environmental campaign. In August 2018, aged 15, Greta began a solo climate revolt by striking from school. Thunberg has since been joined by ten thousands of schools and universities students in more than a dozen countries, in the climate strikes that have become a regular event. A global strike that took place in March drew more than million people, overwhelmed in September by the largest yet with at least 4 million.
She has described the quick spread of the strikes all over the world as amazing. She said that it proves people are never too small to make any difference. Greta’s protests were inspired by some US students who performed walkouts to demand for better gun controls in response to many school shootings.
The Veteran climate activists have expressed their surprise at how much impact Greta has had on public awareness in a short time.
She has begun travelling in order to spread her message outside Sweden. After speaking in the United Nations climate conference in December 2018, Thunberg berated world leaders for behaving like some irresponsible children. After that in January 2019 she also rounded on the global business elite in Davos saying that some companies, some people, and some decision-makers in particular, have known what priceless values they are sacrificing just to continue making unimaginable amounts of money. As well as according to her many of us here today belong to that group of people only.
Greta was born in Stockholm in January 2003; her father, Svante Thunberg, is an actor; her mother is Malena Ernman, who gave up her international career as an opera singer just because of the climate effects of aerodromes. She has Asperger syndrome, which has in the past affected her health, says her father. Greta sees her condition not as a disability but as a gift which has helped in opening her eyes to the climate crisis.
