Gulf Of Alaska: Where Two Oceans Meet
Editorials News | Jun-13-2021
Our world is full of mystery or things that seem nothing less of a miracle. The Gulf of Alaska is one place on earth where we can see a miracle happen.
The Gulf of Alaska is where ‘two oceans meet but do not mix.’ It seems mysterious, isn’t it? But, it is a misnomer.
No two oceans meet at the Gulf of Alaska. But, the unique geography of the Gulf creates a strange natural phenomenon, where two kinds of water appear to meet but not mix in the Gulf. The difference in watercolors is visible to our eyes.
The Gulf of Alaska is bounded by Alaska Peninsula and Kodiak peninsula to the west and the Alexander Archipelago to the east. Within the gulf is located the Glacier Bay. And the rivers Sustina and Copper flow into the Gulf.
During summers, the glaciers melt and carry heavy sediment into the Gulf. Similarly, the rivers bring silt and sediment into the gulf. This part of the gulf appears dark blue. And the ocean water that meets the Gulf is in natural blue color. The point where these two kinds of waters meet appears as if two oceans are meeting but are not mixing. The reason is that as the densities of the waters are different, they do not mix instantly. Albeit, water mixing occurs at the bottom of the ocean.
The heavy clay content, iron, and sediment make the water at the gulf appear darker than glacial meltwater. And the color variations form a clear line between these two oceans. As glacial seawater is sweet, and the ocean water from the Pacific is salty, water mixes slowly here.
Many people consider it a miracle, while some connect it to religious beliefs. If scientists are to be believed, these two oceans mix at some point. Just the wall created by the collision of water of different densities on the upper surface of the ocean offers a unique view of the separation of the two oceans.
Nevertheless, the sight of the union of these two kinds of waters is unique on earth. The view can be seen from the ships passing through. And the scenery is spectacular when seen from the sky. The dark blue water coming from the glaciers and light blue water coming from the sea, and the foam that forms at the confluence of these two kinds of waters is a sight to behold.
Nature works in mysterious ways and provides us with great beauty. The Gulf of Alaska is one such place where nature creates a miracle!
