How Gopichand Made Sure India Did Not Lose Gopichand

In 2015, Dutee Chand was cleared by the Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS) after being suspended in 2014 by IAAF for hyperandrogenism - a condition in which an athlete has very high levels of testosterone in his/her body. Now, the things have completely turned around for her as she is now the second fastest woman in Asia. Her nightmare began in 2014 when she was summoned for a gender test by Athletics Federation of India. Her gender was questioned due to high testosterone in her body. And she was suspended.

But the combined and concentrated efforts her coach Ramesh, Bruce Kidd - Principal at University of Toronto, Payoshni Mitra - doctorate in gender issues in sport and James Bunting - Canadian lawyer that specialises in sport cases. They made the CAS ruling favorable in 2015 and then again in January 2018.

But Dutee had to begin everything again. That's when her coach called Gopichand, badminton guru and head national coach. Gopichand was keen on helping Dutee. His initiative - Khel Udaan project - a brainchild of SAI trained Dutee and 39 promising youngsters in the field of sports. Gopichand is now planning to shift them all to a hostel where their health, diet and training - everything will be taken care of.
