India Excels At Physics Olympiad With 5 Participants And 5 Gold Medals

Indian team gave their spectacular performance at the International Physics Olympiad (2018) that was held in Lisbon, Portugal. 5 students represented India and all 5 of them bagged gold medals. This has happened first time in 20 years. Apart from 86 other member nations, China is the only one to grab maximum medals.
The toppers are: Siddharth Tiwary from Kolkata, Pawan Goyal from Jaipur, Lay Jain from Kota, Nishant Abhangi from Rajkot and Mumbai's Bhaskar Gupta. 42, out of 396 students who participated, won gold medals at a two-stage competition. India has been participating in the competition since 1998 and this is the first time all the members won a gold medal. In the past, we have managed to bag 4 gold and 1 silver, said Praveen Pathak, scientific officer at Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education. He led the team and was quite impressed by the performance. Jain and Goyal are among top 10 rankers of JEE advance. 3 of them will join IIT Bombay with one of them opting for undergraduate in engineering physics. Jain is going to Massachusetts Institute of Technology to pursue a joint degree in computer science and physics. The youngest among them is Nishant, who is in Class XII and will be preparing for JEE. All of them were selected at the Homi Bhabha Center after a rigorous process.
