Editorials News | Aug-03-2018
Most of the Indian kids start out brightly in multiple subjects but tend to lose their grip on the same subjects as they go up in school. The findings were noted in the National Achievement Survey or NAS orchestrated throughout India for kids in 3rd, 5th and 8th classes in government and government-aided schools. The Survey was done by the Ministry of Human Resource Development. The average % of correct answers decline as the students go to higher standards.
Delhi was one of the worst states in the survey with:
Class 3rd children responding to 54% questions in maths
Class 5th children responding to 44% questions in maths: and;
Class 8th children responding to 32% questions in maths
Surprisingly enough, Bihar with the lowest literacy rate shows a much better trend with
Class 3rd children scoring 63% questions correctly in Maths
Class 5th children scoring 52% questions correctly in Maths: and;
Class 8th children scoring 45% questions correctly in Maths
West Bengal was at the bottom in the percentage shift - a big 32 point percentage change. The least percentage shift was found in the states of Jharkhand and Rajasthan with 15% change. Arunachal Pradesh scored the least in class 3rd and 5th with 49% and 39% respectively. Students of Jharkhand and Karnataka scored the best in science. This was the largest survey conducted in the country and one of the largest in the world. A whopping 2.2 million students were assessed in the country from 36 states and Union Territories.
