Editorials News | Feb-04-2019
The season of the Pro Wrestling League is at its best for the Indians this is the Season 4 of PWL finale is throwing up on the event. While the Haryana superstars, having their finished on the losing side of the outcomes in the finals of previous three seasons, they have only lifted the silver medals when they defeated the bronze medal winners who were also the defending champions two times who were NCR Punjab Royals 6-3 as the match played at Greater Noida. Haryana attracted their 5-0 lead this season and it was well before their fascinating player Bajrang Punia had even taken the mat. The ever shrinking league, shape shifting, rather the mesmerizing strokes are the favourite of Indian sports fans.
This year the attraction was the Hisar wrestlers that caused the major low and stress last year and further put efforts to replicate her form in their international competitions, the first was in the World Championships at Budapest in the 57kg category where she won the bronze medal. The current statistics of the players show that four out of the five top performers this year were Indians as against nil in the last two seasons of PWL. When it comes to Bajrang Punia in 65 kg category, he has registered 7 wins in the last 7 matches thus becoming India’s top prospect for Olympic that was picked up in the year 2019 from the spot he was left off in the year 2018, when he was making a winning knock in everything on the league to acheive the World Championships gold. However the competition was very low in his category. But still the most fascinating match was with former three-time World Champion in 61 kg category, Haji Aliyev. Bajrang was at a great show of his agility and aggression as he defeated the Haji by 8-6. While there was also one wrestler to whom everyone was talking about, who was Ravi Kumar. In a category of 57 kg that was really not appreciated as the league was low on the budget, failing to attract big names like Vladimer Khinchegashvili and Soslan Romanov, Ravi Kumar was high at the division. He also defeated the World Under-23 Champion Ibragim Ilyasov of Azerbaijan and beat up Sandeep Tomar, one of the top Indian wrestlers in this category. His attacking and aggressive game is his strength and the defence he makes is strong enough to make him a person to watch out for.
