Aarey Milk Colony located at Goregaon (East) was begun in 1949 and in 1951 the dairy at the Aarey was initiated by the then Prime Minister that was Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru.
The colony was the vision of a pioneer of dairy sector who shared the precious '1963 Ramon Magsaysay Award' with Dr Verghese Kurien i.e. Mr Dara Khurody for revolutionizing the marketing and processing of milk in Mumbai.
Aarey Milk Colony includes 12 villages that are, the Sai, Gundgav,, Royal Palms, Dindoshi (Eksar Pahad), Film City, Aarey, Pahadi Goregaon, Kondivita, Vyraval, Maroshi (Marol), Paspoli and Parjapur. In 1977, around 200 ha (490 acres) of land was cut out from Aarey village to set up the Film City. The colony is spread over a large area of 16 km2 (6 sq mi) and it is located off the Western Express Highway. The Chhota Kashmir with a lake and a picnic spot are among the popular attractions in Aarey.
The colony also has a nursery, gardens, lakes, picnic facilities, an observation pavilion and milk plants. 16,000 cattle are brought up on 1,287 ha (3,180 acres) of land, along with 32 cattle farms. The management of all of these requires outsourcing of a private firm which is destroyed every two years. Film City is also frequently used for shoots of movies.
There is a road attached within the colony that is built by the Maharashtra Public Works Department and which connects the WEH to Powai. The administration of Aarey Colony has earlier collected toll from the users from the road. In 2014, the MCGM has took over the road and ended the mega collection of the toll. It is also known as the location of the proposed carshed and depot for the Line 3 of the Metro of Mumbai.
A plan was then mooted in 2010 for extending the existing Byculla Zoo in the South of Mumbai by constructing a zoo with no enclosures on the land that would be further acquired from both the colony as well as by the adjacent Sanjay Gandhi National Park.
