Know Football like a Pro

The history of Indian football is quite rich, deep and worth the discussion. The journey of football began somewhere around mid19th century when the British introduced us to the game. The first game of football in India was played between ‘Calcutta Club of Civilians’ and the ‘Gentlemen of Barrackpore’ in 1854. ‘Calcutta Football Club’ was the first official football club in India and was established in 1872.

Victories to Remember

The first important achievement for India in the sport of football was when Mohun Bagan won the IFA Shield Trophy on the 29th July in 1911. They defeated East York Regiment by 2-1 victory margin. The victory resulted in new football tournaments and clubs being initiated and they grew rapidly forming a main base in Calcutta. This further lead to the establishment of the regulatory body called- All India Football Federation in 1937. AIFF was later recognized by the FIFA in 1948 and was one of the founder members of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC).

Golden Period of Football

Indian football went through a golden time when India qualified for the football world cup in 1950. They later withdraw the participation when it was found that the FIFA would not allow them to play barefoot. The years following 1950 will always been remembered for being the best ones in the entire football journey. This is because of all the accolades that India received in the sport of football.
