Kochi takes a Step Towards Sustainable Development

In the present world of technology and advancement, the environment is constantly degrading. There is utter need for protecting the environment and taking action towards it. The Kochi Corporation has already taken a step forward towards this. They marked the launch of the World Environment Day celebrations in the district by replacing an acacia tree with the seedling of golden shower tree. The sapling of golden shower tree was planted at Kavalapara Mangium plantation located near Kothamangalam. The program was inaugurated by Divisional Forest Officer, S. Unnikrishnan. Mayor Soumini Jain planted a sapling of sandalwood tree on the campus. K. Sukumaran, former judge of the Kerala High Court, presided over the meeting. As per the plan, the department wishes to grow the seedlings of fruit trees in 68 hectare. This task will be accomplished by NCC cadets and volunteers of the National Service Scheme. The wood of the more than 20-year-old acacia trees that were cut down was given away to Hindustan Newsprint Limited. During his inaugural address at the launch of Nattilengum Thenkani, District Collector K. Mohammed Y. Safirulla emphasized on the need of save water bodies. He further stated that majority of the waterbodies have turned into dumping grounds for plastic waste. It is required for people to come up and preserve these waterbodies by decreasing the usage of plastic. The Collector also distributed seeds to school students as part of the project aiming at harvesting vegetables during this Onam. Additionally, at Ernakulam Junction Railway Station three electric buggies were launched to promote eco-friendly transport within its premises. These carts operate through battery and are cost effective. These were introduced as a joint initiative of Southern Railway and Maini Materials Movement.
