Editorials News | Mar-01-2019
On Friday, a State School Education and Sports Department release said that teachers of school across Maharashtra will also get the advantages of the Seventh Pay Commission along with government employees.
According to this latest release on Friday, the revised pay structure for full-time teachers and faculty employees in private and aided schools will be implemented in accordance with the definition of Employees of the Maharashtra Private Schools (Conditions of Service) Rules, 1977.
Full-time teachers or the teaching staff in private, primary, secondary, and higher secondary schools, junior colleges, teachers’ colleges, and military schools across Maharashtra will get the upgraded pay scale according to the release.
This is the very first time that teachers will also get salary according to the Seventh Pay Commission around the same time as other employees. Education Minister Vinod Tawde said that teachers will also get the seventh pay commission now along with government employees. However, the government is yet to officially announce this implementation of Seventh Pay Commission for senior college teachers and teachers of Mumbai University.
Dr. Balaji Kendre, president of University of Mumbai Academic Staff Association said that a state government committee has submitted a report to the state. This report is regarding the revision of pay for the teachers of the university. He added that there is no decision on this matter which is indicative of the state’s priority towards higher education.
In the past couple of years, there has been no recruitment of teachers in the university. Therefore, the teachers are overburdened and overpressured, yet they receive the least priority. Kendre said that the revisions of pay are first implemented for the staff of Central universities than state universities.
This hiked salary will be received by teachers, equivalent academic staff, registrars, finance officers, and controllers of examination in Central universities and colleges, as well as deemed universities, whose maintenance expenditure, is met by the UGC. This decision is on the basis of various provisions which are laid down by the Department of Expenditure. The universities and colleges can begin various measures to implement the hike in allowances right away, the UGC notice said.
