Making Roads Safer for Women in Bengaluru by Initiating Pink Autos

India has been witnessing a number of crimes against women of recent past. Most of the crimes take place at night. Therefore, women safety has been one of the major concerns of the country. In a rare initiative to remove the fear of women commuters travelling at night, Bengaluru roads are all set to get their first row of pink auto rickshaws.

These pink autos are reserved only for women. Besides, these autos will also be equipped with CCTV cameras and GPS trackers. Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has the plan to distribute pink autos as a part of a women welfare scheme. It is the result of a decision by the administration to reserve 20% of its parking lots for women. The chairperson of BBMP said that they are planning to distribute 500 pink autos under their welfare schemes. Rs 80,000 as subsidy for each auto rickshaw will be provided, and the beneficiary will have to pay the remaining. Both men and women can be drivers though women will be given preference. A special training programme will be organized to train male drivers how to behave with woman passengers. It is being hoped that the state government’s move will really benefit women commuters of the city and provide them a fear free ride as well. However, the monitoring of CCTVs of the autos is still an issue. Bengaluru also plans to launch pink toilets reserved for women in future to give them clean and hygienic toilets.
