Marin Makes History After Winning World Championship Thrice
Editorials News | Aug-10-2018
Spain's Carolina Marin defeated PV Sindhu to become the first woman shuttler to win the world championship three times in a row. The singles final was held in Nanjing. Marin is now the reigning champion of the world and the Olympics, all thanks to her victorious win 21-19, 21-10 in the championship. The 25-year old has added to her titles of 2014 and 2015, one from 2018 too. These titles accompany her emphatic victory over PV Sindhu for Olympic Gold at Rio in 2016. The attacking Marin got each winning point in the first game. But the match became toe-to-toe after Sindhu, 23, edged ahead of her. But that didn't last for long as Marin dragged her back to 16-16.
The Spaniard was trying to get on with the game quickly but Sindhu's never giving up spirit refused to give her a lead so as to kill the momentum before her opponent could build it. Sindhu hit the net which let Marin take the first game to her side in a mere 27 minutes. She took that to her advantage pretty quickly and went on to create history. This added to Sindhu's disappointment because she was beaten at last year's World Championships final by Nozomi Okuhara from Japan. This year again she had to settle for silver.
Meanwhile, Kento Momota from Japan also jotted down his name in the badminton World Championship after becoming the first Japanese man to do so.
