Mary Kom Wins 6th Medal for Nation, Emerges as Top Sports Icon

Mangte Chungneijang Mary Kom popularly known as Mary Kom or Magnificent Mary, created history in Women’s boxing on Saturday winning her sixth world championship gold for India at the 10th World Women’s Boxing Championships at the JD Jhadav Hall. Mary Kom is a 35-year-old mother of three children who is the winner of Padma Shree award and several other titles including Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna, Padma Bhushan etc.

At present Mary Kom is a six-time World Amateur Boxing champion from India and the only woman boxer to have won a medal in each one of the six world championships. She is Nicknamed as 'Magnificent Mary,' she is also the only Indian woman boxer to have qualified for the 2012 Summer Olympics, competing in the flyweight (51 kilograms) category and winning the bronze medal. Once she has been ranked as No. 4 AIBA World Women's Ranking Flyweight category. She became the first Indian woman boxer to get the gold medal in the Asian Games in 2014 in Incheon, South Korea. India's MC Mary Kom won a historic sixth gold medal in world championships on 24th November 2018, beating Ukraine's Hanna Okhota in a concordant 5-0 verdict in the 48 kg category summit clash. Speaking at the official press conference, Mary Kom recalled her participation in the New Delhi event held in 2006. Mary Kom said “At that time, boxers from fewer countries had participated. It was not even included in Olympics. Though we won eight medals — four gold included — competition is much tough nowadays and considering that fact our results here (one gold, a silver and two bronze medals) were great,”. Further after the win, Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh announced that the State government will honor M.C. Mary Kom by granting an appropriate title in identification to her unrivalled knock of winning the sixth gold medal in the World Boxing Championship and her dynamic career in the field of boxing. Mary Kom comes from a the Komrem community who are very proud of Mary Kom for introducing the name of its Community to the world, said Lallkhomang Serto, president of the Union.
