Editorials News | Oct-11-2019
The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports is among one of the branches of the Government of India that administers Department of Youth Affairs and also Department of Sports in the country. Kiren Rijiju is assigned as the current Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports and is seen in the capacity of Minister of State (Independent Charge).
The ministry is one of the pivotal parts on the involvement of sports in the country and its youth. The ministry also provides the annual National Sports awards in several categories which include the Arjuna Award and Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna awards.
The Ministry was earlier set up as the Department of Sports at the time period of organisation of Asian Games 1982, New Delhi. Its name was further changed to the Department of Youth Affairs & Sports during the time of celebration of the International Youth Year in 1985. Afterwards, it became a separate Ministry on the date, 27 May, 2000. Subsequently, in the year 2008, the Ministry has been bifurcated and divided into Department of Youth Affairs and Department of Sports under the two separate Secretaries.
Department of Youth Affairs
Unlike the department of sports, many of the other functions of the department are in relation to other ministries, like Ministry of Education, Health and Family Welfare, Employment & Training, thus the functioning is largely as a facilitator for the youth building.
It provides two awards, Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Award and the other Indira Gandhi NSS Award.
What is Definition of Youth according to this?
The United Nations has defined "Youth" as 15–24 years and in the Commonwealth, it ranges from 15–29 years. In order to use this definition more in line with such international standards, the Draft NYP 2012 has changed the definition from 13–35 years to 16–30 years.
The department of sports along with this also gives the National sports awards which include Special Awards to Medal Winners in International Sports Events, Maulana Abul Kalam Azad Trophy, Dhyanchand Award for the Lifetime achievement in Games and Sports, Arjuna Award, Dronacharya Award, Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award and Rashtriya Khel Protsahan Puraskar. These also help in bringing the amazing FIFA U-17 World cup to our country. Though a huge part of it was then played by the advisors including the Sports Ministry.
