“Mothers' Insomnia Costs Children's Sleep Quality”
Editorials News | Sep-06-2017
Being a mother is the most challenging task a woman can ever have. It is full of shocks and surprises as well. Sleep plays an essential role for everybody’s health. Short sleep and poor sleep quality can affect mental health, learning, memory, and school achievement in children. Insomnia is the most common sleep disorder in adulthood, which is defined by symptoms such as difficulty falling or staying asleep at night.
Mother’s sleeping pattern has a strong impact on the child. A recent research has revealed that children are more prone to have poor sleeping pattern if their mothers suffer from insomnia. Insomnia develops because a new mother becomes extra cautious towards activities of the child even during night. Aspects of insomnia, such as difficulties with sleep, frequent nightmares and morning awakening, are among the most common sleep issues in children. Several issues are responsible for linking parents’ and children’s sleep. Children adopt their sleeping habits from their parents and they also share the genes with them that become the reason for poor sleep.
It has been found that children whose mothers are suffering from insomnia, their children fall asleep later, get less sleep, and spend very less time in deep sleep. Childhood insomnia drives the child towards anxiety, depression, aggression, and attention deficit hyper-activity disorder (ADHD). It is highly advisable to treat it by Yoga and meditation and finally by taking doctors advice before it’s too late.
