No More Holidays

School days are some of the most important days of our lives. These are the days that help us shape the future that we want to see for ourselves. Each year on a average consists of about 6000 waking hours out of which on a average students in India spend 1000 hours in school. According to experts the more instructional days help children learn better and the experts feel that students should spend more time in school.
What do we really mean when we speak about school hours? More than 100 years ago the Carnegie Foundation had played a role in setting a standard for the duration of course length, especially with regard to higher education. A “Carnegie unit” is 120 school hours of instruction. The standard is still in use in the American schools however, in India we go by the rules set by the British many moons ago.
The Organization for Economic Co-Operation and Development (OECD) collects global data about school hours. It has been found that an average Indian eight grader spends a cumulative 130 hours more in school during his/her academic year that their counter parts in other countries.
Jharkhand has the highest number of working days in a year for students 241 days, followed by Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Bihar with 236 days, Punjab 233 days and Karnataka in the fourth position with 232 days.
Recently Schools in Hyderabad have been requesting the authorities to allow then to run schools on the second Saturday which is at present a school holiday. The schools remained closed due to 7 unscheduled holidays at the start of the year which has had cascading effect on the syllabus.
