Editorials News | May-31-2018
Lately, Mumbai is getting into a lot of pollution and is in the race of beating Delhi as the most polluted city in our country. The central pollution control board made it compulsory for every state pollution control board to keep a check upon the quality of water and update the data on respective sites so that the information is accessible to the public. This is one of the most important rule under the center’s national water quality monitoring programme. (NWQMP)
The report covers 228 surface water quality monitoring stations across the state, which includes 28 from the Pune district. The Maharashtra pollution control board (MPCB) did not provide any update regarding the condition of water quality for both coastal and inland bodies of the state since November 2017. The water quality in the district of Mumbai falls within hazardous levels with 17 locations stating ‘bad’ water quality on average between April 2016 and March 2017. Ten stations had the water quality in ‘medium to good category’ while one station stated the water quality at Khadakvasla Dam was said to be in ‘good to excellent quality’. On 16th May, a Mumbai based non-governmental organization called as Watchdog Foundation filed a complaint with the chief secretary of Maharashtra government and MPCB which highlighted this particular issue.
