An annual series of free cultural celebrations in the Hawaii of Unites States are known as Aloha Festivals. Aloha Festivals are the only statewide cultural festival in the nation. It consists of concerts, parades, street parties called ho‘olaule‘a as well as many other special events for resident and tourist families. It used to be a multi island festival but now it has been reduced to just one island of Oahu.
The Aloha Festivals were started in 1946 as Aloha Week by former members of the local Junior Chamber of Commerce. It was started in the spirit of preserving the Hawaiian culture and heritage. Goriann Akau who is the manager of the festivals said that in 1946, after the war, Hawaiians needed an identity. They felt lost and needed to regroup and when they started celebrating their culture, they began to feel proud.
Now, there are 4 festivals events during the September month in Aloha Festivals. The highlights are the presentation of the Royal Court, a block party with vendors and performers in the heart of Waikiki, and the Floral Parade which marches from Ala Moana Boulevard down through Kalakaua Avenue.
