Editorials News | Oct-14-2017
A film movement in Indian cinema that started in the state of West Bengal in the 1950s proving to be an alternative to the mainstream commercial Indian cinema (Bollywood) got recognized as Parallel Cinema. Parallel Cinema was highly inspired by the Italian Neorealism.
It was started just before the French New Wave and Japanese New Wave. It was the forerunner to the Indian New Wave of the 1960s. The movement of Parallel Cinema was initially led by the Bengali Cinema. Parallel Cinema gave birth to internationally acclaimed filmmakers such as Satyajit Ray, Mrinal Sen, Ritwik Ghatak, Tapan Sinha and others. Later, this cinema got recognized in other film industries of India and Bangladesh. The cinema was appreciated for its serious content, realism and naturalism, symbolic elements with an observant eye over sociopolitical climate of the times and finally for the disagreement with the dance and song routine insertions that are closely associated with mainstream Indian films.
The various beautiful films produced by Parallel Cinema were Neecha Nagar, Pather Panchali, Aparajito, The World of Apu, Do Bigha Zamin, Piya Ka Ghar, Rajnigandha, Nagarik, etc.
