Ramkumar Ramanathan Talks About his Fitness: Tennis

Ramkumar Ramanathan, a 24 year old is a professional Indian tennis player who is the first Indian player to reach an ATP world tour singles final after Somdev Devvarman. The highest achieved singles ranking by him is 111th place on 30 July 2018. He represents India in the Davis Cup.

At initial stage of his career he broke up in the the headlines when he qualified for the main draw of the Chennai Open and beat then Indian No.1 Somdev Devvarman in the first round but eventually he lost to Marcel Granollers in second round and got out. Later on for the first time he reached to quarterfinals at an ATP World Tour event where he defeated Daniel Gimeno Traver and Alexander Kudryavtsev in first and second rounds respectively but thereafter he lost to Aljaž Bedene in quarterfinals. Currently in 2018, Ramanathan opened his new season by entering Maharashtra Open as a wild card entry. But eventually he lost in round 2 against Marin Cilic in men’s singles. Thereafter he then entered the qualifying draw of Australian Open later on this year where he lost in final qualifying round to Vasek Pospisil. Ramkumar started the year at number 148 in the world and he therefore did enough to be at the top 150 despite putting much efforts. Currently he is ranked at 132. He will now be featuring in his 35th tournament this season in KPIT challenger apart from appearing in two Davis Cup ties and at the Asian Games in Jakrata. In his recent interview with PTI, when asked about his future strategy, he said “When I was playing in US last year, I was doing a lot of practice on serve and volley and I was using it in matches. I was building on that. I felt better on court. The more I played serve and volley on big points, I started to feel confident. It’s not bad for me. I am tall, I cover the court well, so why not?,” In 18 tournaments he played on the Challenger Tour, he suffered eight first round exists, lost five in the second round, made three quarterfinals and reached only one final. He further quoted that “The most important thing is that I am fit. I played the tournaments I wanted to play. Even if it was little more, I think I did the right thing”.
