Editorials News | Jan-23-2018
The Indian 10-rupee coin is a denomination of the Indian rupee. It is the highest-denomination coin minted in India since 2005. The first ₹10 coin was minted in the year 2005.
It had a diameter of 27 mm. The coin featured "भारत" and "INDIA" on the top, lion capital with 'Satyameva Jayate' below at left, and the date of minting on the obverse. The second design was introduced in 2009. It featured two horizontal lines, the lettering "भारत" and "INDIA" on the top, the lion capital in the middle and year of printing on the obverse. The third design was brought up in 2011 which featured the lettering "भारत" on left and "INDIA" on right on the outer ring, and the year of mint and mint mark below. The lion capital was situated at the centre with the lettering "सत्यमेव जयते" below it. Currently, ₹10 coin in circulation is from the 2011 design of the coin. In July 2016, as a result of some rumors on social media, traders and shopkeepers stopped accepting the ₹10 coin entirely. They stated that these coins are fake and lack the '₹' symbol. In order to clarify the suspicion, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on January 17, 2018, declared that all the 14 designs of Rs. 10 coin are valid and legal tender for transactions. These coins have varying features which symbolize different themes of economic, social and cultural values. The RBI has also instructed banks to accept these coins in their daily transactions.
