Editorials News | Aug-08-2019
Rohit Gurunath Sharma hails from Bansod, Nagpur. He is a right handed batsman. Generally he is the one to open the innings for his team however; there have been times when he also played in the middle order. Occasionally he also bowls right-arm-off-break.
He started making himself noticed with his free flowing stroke play and cruising through first-class cricket with an average which was well above 50. He got himself in the focus of the spotlight when he scored a whopping unbeaten triple hundred (309) at Brabourne Stadium, Mumbai while playing for Ranji Trophy against Gujarat.
Rohit was selected for the Indian team for the first time during India's tour to Ireland in 2007. However, tough he got to make his debut against England at Durban during the 2007 ICC world T20 but did not get to bat. It was only when an in-form Yuvraj had to step aside due to an injury that opened the doors for Rohit to showcase his talent. As a last minute emergency replacement Rohit stroked his way to a fluid half century against the likes of Pollock, Ntini and Morkel, showing exemplary maturity under pressure helping the Indian team to knock the hosts out of the tournament in their own backyard.
Rohit Sharma's journey to success wasn't an easy one. He struggled with consistency, but the IPL gave him the opportunity to stay not just relevant but it proved to be his mark sheet and he did score well. He is among the all-time top run-scorers in the IPL, has 34 IPL fifties to his name. Not just personal scores it also gave Rohit the opportunity to unveil his leadership quality which went to impress a lot of people.
Though he took time to establish himself a tad bit late in his career at the top order but he has become a vital player in India's limited-overs setup. As of today after helping the Indian team to clinch a series victory over West Indies, Rohit Sharma now proudly holds almost all the major T20I batting records surpassing Chris Gayle who till now held the record of striking the highest no of sixes (107) in T20Is. With the latest achievements sure makes Rohit Sharma the undisputed king as far as the T20Is are concerned. Rohit also tops the charts with most centuries in T20Is followed by Glenn Maxwell and Colin Munro. In the 96 T20Is that he has played, he managed to lead the way with 2,422 runs with Virat Kohli following him closely with 2,310 runs.
