Sandeep Tomar Qualifies The Asian Games Trials

Asian Games wrestling squad was finally complete when Sandeep Tomar won the selection trials in the 57kg freestyle category in Sonepat at the Sai Training Centre. Sandeep Tomar who participated in Rio Olympics had to get the better of Utkarsh Kale to qualify the trials following the three-way tie which was necessary after three prominent wrestlers i.e. Utkarsh Kale, Ravi Kumar and Sandeep Tomar were tied on points in the earlier trials. Tomar equaled the score even when he was 2-6 down. He was declared the winner when he won the last scoring point. Utkarsh beat Kumar 10-0 in the other round.

Rahul Aware, Commonwealth Games gold medalist made the request to delay the trials by almost a week as he needed more time to prepare, withdrew citing injury. He has already submitted a medical certificate that claims a ligament tear in his right knee, as said by the Wrestling Federation of India.

Trials of the remaining freestyle categories were also closed with Pankaj Rana(70kg), Sachin Rathi(79kg) and Sombir who is a Commonwealth gold medalist. The preliminary trials have been postponed for time being after a request made by Praveen Rana following the demise of his mother.
