Smallest Energy Efficient Computer Chips for Computers & Smart Phones

Scientists have recently created smaller, faster, and more energy-efficient computer chips for computers and smartphones. This study was done by the team of researchers from Osaka University and the Nara Institute of Science and Technology. As per the researchers, this is the first time they have created such device. For the research, the scientists used scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) to create images of atomically flat side-surfaces of 3D silicon crystals.

The scientists stated that the processing speed of smartphones and computing devices has increased dramatically over time as the number of transistors that can fit on a single computer chip continues to increase. Additionally, these devices are loaded with millions of tiny transistors.

Based on Moore's Law, the number of transistors per chip will double about every 2 years. Additionally as per the reports by the scientists’ team, the increment in this area it seems to be holding up.

To balance this speed of rapid innovation, computer manufacturers are continually on the lookout for new methods to make each transistor ever smaller.
