Strikes, Vehicle Breakdowns, and Water-logging Hamper Capital’s Functioning

Light rain showers on Tuesday once again caused water logging and traffic jams across certain areas of the capital. The Delhi Traffic Police issued 73 Twitter and Facebook alerts throughout the day, warning the residents and commuters about the conditions.
The rain left a number of people stranded on roads. The DTC buses too suffered breakdowns due to water logging. What made the situation worse was the indefinite strike called by 85,000 autos and 18,000 taxis. The strike has been declared against app-based taxi services.
“I waited for an auto for about 15 minutes and then got the information about the strike and headed to catch the bus. But on reaching Delhi Cantonment, near Sadar Bazar, the bus broke down and I was stranded. Finally, I booked a cab and reached office,” Sugandha Sharma, a resident of Janakpuri, said.
Delhi Transport Minister Satyendar Jain said, “This strike is being managed by people from BJP. It is a BJP-sponsored strike and we have already written to the Delhi Police asking them to take action against any rowdy elements. Only 2% to 4% auto drivers are on strike.”
Jain also said shutting down app-based services was not in the hands of the government. Twenty unions have come together and formed a Joint Action Committee to enforce the strike.
If you are affected due to water logging, you can contact and find help on 1266, 011-23220010 (North MCD); 155303 (East MCD); 1266, 011-23220006 (South MCD); 1077 (Delhi Government); and 011-25844444 to file complaints regarding traffic.
