Sunil Gavaskar In Disagreement With Kohli
Editorials News | Aug-12-2019
Lately, former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar highly praised Shreyas Iyer. Shreyas has recently performed extraordinarily after scoring a match-winning 71 on his return to Indian squad in the 2nd ODI against West Indies in Port of Spain on Sunday. Sunil Gavaskar stated that Shreyas Iyer beautifully used the opportunity that to his credit in the 2nd ODI. He further added that Iyer is more appropriate for being placed to play at No.4 and Rishabh Pant at No. 5. Gavaskar gave his valued comments after Virat Kohli stated that “Team India are backing their young wicketkeeper-batsman to bat Rishabh Pant at No. 4 in the 50-overs format”. Shreyas Iyer pitched in the game at the Queen's Park Oval when India had almost lost the wickets of Rohit Sharma and Rishabh Pant one after the other. However, Iyer made use of all his experience and made a 125-run stand with the Indian captain Virat Kohli for the 4th wicket. On the contrary, Pant, who was batting at No. 4, managed just 20 before playing a horror shot in order to throw his wicket away. Iyer managed to keep the scorers busy right from the word go and scored a beautiful 71 at more than a run-a-ball. His inning had 5 boundaries and a six. Iyer headed back to the pavilion in the 46th over while trying to accelerate at the death. In his interview with Sony Ten 1, Gavaskar stated that in his opinion Rishabh Pant is a much better player just like MS Dhoni at 5 for 6 as a finisher because that is the position where his natural game and natural flair need to come into play. If India gets a great start with Virat Kohli, Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma batting for 40-45 overs, then Pant at No. 4. But if it is a question of batting for 30-35 overs, then Shreyas Iyer should be placed at No. 4 and Pant at No. 5. Sheryas Iyer has actually grabbed his opportunity. He came up at No. 5. He indeed had plenty of overs to his credit. He had the company and support of his skipper, Virat Kohli. Nothing can match up this opportunity because the skipper takes the pressure off you. Indeed one learns from the best batsmen in the world. The best place for learning in cricket is the non-striker's end. That's what exactly Shreyas Iyer was trying to do with Virat Kohli at the other end.
