Sushil Kumar was born near Najafgarh located at South West Delhi, the famous wrestler who has been an idol for young wrestlers in past few years. Son of Diwan Singh who worked as a driver in Delhi at MTNL, while his mother is a housewife.He was inspired by his father and his cousin Sandeep to be a wrestler.
Sushil was initially started his trainingat pehlwani wrestling in the famous akhadalocated in the Chhatrasal Stadium from the very early age of 14. With very low funds and poor facilities for the training of wrestling in India he was an important part of the 2008 Olympic team and won the Olympics gold medal, his family provided necessary dietary and other supplements which was strictly vegetarian. As far as education is concerned he did Graduation and Post-Graduation in the field of Physical education from Noida College of Physical Education, at Dadri. Sushil is presently the assistant commercial manager in Indian Railways.He won a bronze medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and then in the 66 kg weight categoryhe was the winner of the 2010 world title, thereafter won a silver medal at London Olympics in 2012 which helped him to become the only Indian to win the two Olympic medals individually. Before him only Khashaba Dadasaheb Jadhav had won a bronze medal in Olympics that too at the 1952 Summer Olympics.After winning an Olympic medal for India he was honored with the Rajiv Gandhi KhelRatna in June 2009 which is termed ashighest Indianhonour for the sportspersons.The last medal Sushil won was the gold in the 74 kg category at the Commonwealth Games of 2014.Sushil before the Olympics win had won the gold medals at the famous Commonwealth wrestling championships in 2005 as well as in 2007. He was placed at seventh in the World Championships in 2007and also won a bronze medal in Beijing at 2008 Olympic Games. The legendry player before the KhelRatna was honoredwith the Arjuna Award in the year 2006 for his brilliant performance in the commonwealth games and then after the KhelRatna in 2009 he was also given Padma shreefor his great contribution in wrestling by the Indian Government in 2011.
