Editorials News | Aug-12-2018
The best approach to lean anything new is to look at it with enthusiasm and interest. One can learn fast if she/she tries to understand the ideas and concepts rather than just memorize without understanding. Without understanding the concept one tends to forget it as fast as it has been memorized. The best method is always to cultivate an active interest in the given topic, which will lead to a much more natural learning process than repetition and one will be able to retain the information for a very long time. However, human mind has always been very innovative and have devised one of the most successful way of memorizing information through mnemonics.
What are mnemonics? Mnemonics is a tool that helps to remember a large amount of information or facts. Mnemonics can be in the form of a rhyme, acronym, image or a phrase that helps us to remember few or many facts in a certain way or order. For example how to remember the names of the Great Lakes, remember HOMES, and how does it work, well H-Huron, O-Ontario, M-Michigan-Erie and S-Superior. Mnemonics work better if you can attach your previously acquired knowledge to it, it can be logical or it can even be weird. Visual memory is always more impactful so if you can make the idea relate to any visual entity or weave a story around it it will not only enhance but will aid in multiplying the retention power.
As a teacher these are great tools to make children learn, understand and retain information faster, and one such teacher in India has created his own innovative technique to make children learn the names of 29 states of India in just 29 seconds.
