  • The Cholas of the Sangam Period stretched their territory across the present day District Tiruchirapalli, District Tiruvarur, District Nagapattinam, District Ariyalur, District Pudukkottai, District Perambalur, District Thanjavur in Tamil Nadu and also district Karaikal.
  • If we talk about their timeline then the presence of the Cholas was from 300 BCE to 300 CE.
  • The capital city of Cholas was Uraiyur previously and later shifted to Puhar, also known as Poompuhar.
  • The emblem of this dynasty was “tiger”.
  • King Karikala was one of the most important and renowned rulers of this dynasty.
  • Kaveripattanam is one of the important ports of the Chola Sangam Dynasty.
  • Pattinappalai written by Kadiyalur Uruttirangannanar has expressed about his life and military achievements.
  • Battle of Venni is one of the important battles fought by him against the alliance of Cheras, the Pandyas and 11 smaller chieftains and is written in various Sangam poems about it.
  • Venni is identified as the modern day Kovilvenni near Thanjavur, southern India. The Battle of Venni dated back approximately to 130 CE.
  • Vahaipparandalai is another important battle fought by King Karikala. In this battle nine enemy chieftains submitted before him.
  • His military achievements made him the lord of the Tamil region that time.
  • Trade and Commerce prospered in his rule.
  • He also contributed in the construction of irrigation tanks near River Kaveri to store water for the reclaimed lands from forest for farming.
