The Game of Kings: Tennis
Editorials News | Mar-05-2017
Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Leander Paes, Serena Williams and Sania Mirza are some of the popular legends of the world of tennis. Tennis is a sport that welcomes people from all age groups.
Tennis was originally called lawn tennis because it was played on grass lawns by men and ladies in the Victorian Age. The game is believed to have originated from a French handball game called jeu de paume (game of the palm) played in the 12th-13th century. That game later evolved into a complex indoor racket-ball game called real tennis.
Today, tennis is played on a variety of surfaces. It can be played in singles or doubles. Points form a game, games form a set, and sets form a match. The matches are in the best of three or five sets formats. The points in tennis are scored bizarrely: 15, 30 and 40. Zero is referred to as love. The first player/team to win four points wins the game. A set is won by winning six games with a two-game margin.
The four most important tennis tournaments—Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon, and US Open—are called Grand Slams and are held annually.
In children, tennis helps in building strong muscles and bones. It improves hand-eye coordination and motor skills. It offers a holistic workout and instils sportsmanship.
