The Tamil Nadu textbook and the Tamil Nadu Educational Services Corporation use more than 40,000 tons of paper to print more than 8 crore textbooks for students in the 1st to 12th grade.
The initiative of the school education department to save trees by creating book banks is gaining everyone's praise. It has instructed all governments and government-assisted schools to collect old books from all the students that are being distributed and redistribute them to the next batch.
More than 40,000 tons of paper are used each year by the Tamil Nadu Book and Education Services Corporation to print more than 8 crore textbooks for students in grades 1-12, according to a report in The Times of India. This implies that about 8 lakh trees are cut to make pulp for paper. Following an order from the National Green Court, the education department ordered all directors of education to start creating book banks.
A school education department official said: "Schools have started collecting old books from students who had written exams this year." The official added that if the books are in good condition and the students decide to reuse them, the books are delivered to them.
Pradeep Yadav, the school education secretary, was reportedly very interested in the initiative and directed the schools to start book banks.
However, it is possible that the initiative does not obtain immediate results, since the textbooks for 8th will be revised in the next academic year. Some revisions were also made in the textbooks of the 1st, 6th, 9th and 11th grades this academic year.
The department hopes that awareness of environmental conservation will encourage students to take part in the initiative and save hundreds of thousands of trees. One official said the move could be extended to private schools in the future.
