Although Wales may be more famous for being a land of dragons, it also seems that Wales was a land of dinosaurs with the discovery of a new species of beast by fossil hunter brothers Nick and Rob Hanigan. The youth therapist was found after a fall of rocks on the cliffs of Llantwit Major, Vale of Glamorgan in 2014. Appointed in Latin by dragon thief and the name of the brothers, the dragorapter hanigani of 201 million years, a relative of T-Rex, is now on display at the National Museum of Wales.
After exploring a metal detector for three decades, Mike Smith, of Milford Haven, finally got lucky when he unearthed part of a Celtic horse harness dating from about 2,000 years ago. The find, which also included a terret ring to guide the reins and a pair of carriage wheels, is believed to be the first burial of Celtic chariots in Wales. The burials of cars were reserved for the chiefs of high rank, who would be buried with their cars, horses, gear and even weapons.
The heat wave of 2018 had some surprising consequences for aerial archaeologists. From their high altitudes, they saw innumerable settlements lost as crop marks. One of these sites was found near Tywyn, Gwynedd, while other prehistoric sites and an alleged Roman stronghold were seen in Monmouthshire. The discoveries are now being followed by field investigations.
Is there gold in the hills? That's what the heads of a gold mining company expect while they conduct research on a 20-mile stretch of the Dolgellau gold belt in Gwynedd. His plan is to reopen the Clogau St David's gold mine in Bontddu, Dolgellau, which closed in 1989. Clogau gold has been used for many royal weddings, a tradition that began with the Queen Mother in 1923.
This layer of gold is a ceremonial layer of unique gold that was once placed on the shoulders of its wearer. Made in the Bronze Age some 3,700 years ago, it was found in 1833 by stonemasons in Mold, Flintshire. They discovered a tomb covered with stone with the remains of a skeleton and the cloak. Considered one of the best examples of gold that is worked in Europe, it is now one of the most precious artifacts of the British Museum.
This may look like an old and rotten plank; in fact, it is more likely to be an excavated canoe from the Bronze Age that is located in the north of Wales beneath a burned mound. The hollowed oak would probably have transported around the cargo, perhaps the copper of Anglesey, in the nets of the rivers. It could also have helped migration to early Britain, taking people to and from the area along river networks or even abroad.
According to Rhianydd Biebrach, of the Saving Treasures program, Telling Stories, directed by the National Museum Wales of Cardiff, the most valuable findings of the Middle Ages were items that were accidentally lost. This ring, from 1500, belonged to a merchant of Haverfordwest. It is engraved with the Tau cross of San Antonio, which was believed to protect against diseases. The pendant, which is located near Newport, also had a religious significance, the letters inscribed AGLA referring to the Hebrew phrase Atha Gebri Leilan Adonai, which means "You are powerful forever, oh Lord".
