The Powerful Technique of Grappling

Grappling, refers to a close fighting technique. It is used to gain physical advantage like improving one’s position or injuring the opponent. It covers techniques, styles and martial arts.

It is practised as a combat sport and also finds application in self-defence. It doesn’t involve the use of weapons or striking. There are different types of grappling techniques. These are: Clinching, Takedowns, Throws, Sprawling, Submission holds, Securing or Controlling Techniques, Escapes, Turnovers, Reversals or Sweeps. In varying fighting systems, the degree of use of grappling techniques also varies. Some of the exclusive grappling arts include amateur wrestling, Pehlwani, Pehlwani submission wrestling, judo, sumo, and Brazilian jiu-jitsu. These do not permit the use of striking. Certain combat sports that involve the use of grappling and striking both are shooto and mixed martial arts competitions. There are various regional styles of grappling across the world that is practised within a limited geographical area. Grappling styles like Sport judoBrazilian jiu-jitsu, Sport Sambo and several types of wrestling like freestyle and Greco-Roman have gained global popularity. The most popular grappling tournaments around the world are: ADCC Submission Wrestling World Championship, and World Jiu-Jitsu Championship. GRiND is the first Indian Pro Grappling tournament series.
