TNPL Scandal
Editorials News | Oct-09-2019
Some problems have been faced by The Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) with a few first-class cricketers and a couple of coaches coming under the BCCI Anti-Corruption Unit's (ACU) browse for doubtful match-fixing. BCCI's ACU Chief Ajit Singh, however, ruled out the probability of any international player being a suspect. The TNPL, owned by the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association, was started in 2016 and countenance eight franchises.
WhatsApp messages from unknown people were received by some of the players. We are trying to find out who those people are. We have recorded the statements of the players and we will try to track the senders of the messages" Ajit Singh told reporters in New Delhi.
"There is no international player involved. The players who have got any message, he is supposed to report it to us, it’s part of his accountability," he added.
While no names have been acknowledged yet, accusation of match-fixing have appear and are being related to one particular mid-table franchise in the TNPL, which many believe has gained fame over the last couple of years. Gentleman game has been corrupted from a long time, accusations put on players, coaches has been a long story, but cricket still is not fully free of this curse.
"This franchise accomplished among the last three in the eight-team TNPL table. There are a lot of grey areas related to their ownership patterns. Their decision of players and coaches has also not been above board" a BCCI source told PTI on conditions of namelessness.
In fact, the role could come under the scanner. The specific coach has earlier also been involved with franchises with suspect dealings.
"Nothing can be controlled out. There is one coach, who was related with a corrupted IPL franchise, later coached a Ranji team and was, for one season, related to a TNPL franchise that is under the scanner" the BCCI source said.
There always have been questions about the character of this specific coach as to how he landed IPL support staff jobs as well as contracts in these state franchise league teams.
A source stated that “How come this guy, who has not even played proper first-class cricket, is so sought after?"
When former Indian cricketer VB Chandrasekhar, who owned the franchise Kanchi Veerans, committed suicide allegedly over the debts he acquired in the league at that time the TNPL had hit the headlines.
