Tug Of War: History, Rules, Techniques And Legacy

Tug of War is a sport that directly tests the strength of one team against another. It is a sport that involves bringing another team to a certain distance in a direction by pulling them with the help of a rope. The origin of the sport is not certain but its earliest mentions are found in Egypt, Greece, India and China. In these places there was a legend that the Sun and the Moon played tug of war fighting over light and darkness. According to a book in Tang dynasty, the name was used by military commander and was used to train warriors.

There are tug of war clubs in a lot of countries. Both men and women participate in the sport equally. The sport was included in the Olympic Games. It was played as a part of it from 1900 till 1920 but has not been played in the Olympics since. The sport is now a part of World Games. The Tug of War International Federation (TWIF) organises World Championships for national team two times each year. The game is played by both indoor and outdoor contestants and a similar competition is done for the club teams.

There are 53 countries that are associated with the TWIF; some of them are Britain, Scotland, India, Ireland, England, South Africa, Belgium, Italy, US and Switzerland.
