Unearthing the Rich Heritage of Abbey of Cluny

During an excavation at the Abbey of Cluny in September 2017, a huge treasure was unearthed. In that dig 2,200 silver deniers and oboles, 21 Islamic gold dinars, a signet ring, and other objects made of gold were recovered that is being considered as a big achievement. Apart from these coins from Arab, silver deniers, and a signet ring has also been unearthed.

The excavation campaign was running under the guidance of Bourgogne-Franche-Comté Regional Department of Cultural Affairs (DRAC), in September. The entire campaign lasted for one month starting from September that ended in October last. A precious gold signet ring has also been found. It accompanies with a red intaglio engraving the image of god. It is possible that it dates back to the first half of the 12th century. A small circular object that is made of gold has also been found. This remarkable invention includes stuffs of great value. It includes 21 gold dinars and a signet ring, a very expensive piece of jewellery and gems of middle ages.

It is speculated that at that time, Western currency was dominated by the silver dinar. Gold coins were used for special transactions for business purposes. This discovery has opened the way to understand the rich heritage of early humans.
