Union Minister Prakash Javadekar Indicated That The New Education Policy Is Ready
Editorials News | Mar-30-2019
The report of the committee which is headed by former ISRO chief K Kasturirangan for drafting a new National Education Policy is ready but may not be taken up at this juncture as the model code of conduct has already kicked in, Union Human Resource Development (HRD) minister Prakash Javadekar informed.
He said that the report is ready, the Hindi translation is also being done. And now he doesn’t know whether they can publish it with the model code of conduct in force. He is very sure that soon after elections it will come. After all, NEP is to be implemented from 2020 to 2040.
Constituted last June, the Kasturirangan panel has been granted five extensions so that the report could be finalized. Last year, the tenure of the committee was extended in December and on April 6th, June 20th and August 28th this year.
The NEP was a primary reform promised by the ruling BJP in its manifesto before the general elections of 2014. The national policy of the country on education was framed in 1986 and modified in 1992. The new policy is expected to lay down the contours of the method education is disseminated in the country from the most basic to the higher levels.
This was the second panel which is formed by the government for bringing out a draft of the education policy of the country. The first is headed by former cabinet secretary TSR Subramanian. It was constituted when Smriti Irani was the Union HRD minister. In the year 2016, the Subramanian committee submitted its recommendations. However, having received the report, the government went to form the Kasturirangan panel.
