Vinesh Phogat was born on 25 August 1994. She is an Indian wrestler who comes from a successful background of wrestling with her cousins Geeta Phogat and Babita Kumari, both international wrestlers and Commonwealth Games medalists as well.
Vinesh Phogat is the first Indian woman wrestler to win gold in both Commonwealth and Asian games. As per the latest news, on Monday August 20, 2018, Vinesh Phogat won the gold medal and India’s fifth medal at the ongoing 2018 Asian Games. She beat Yuki Irie from Japan in Women's Freestyle 50 kg gold medal match. She took a 4-0 lead initially before stretching it further to 6-2 to pocket the yellow metal. Vinesh earlier also achieved a comfortable 11-0 victory over South Korea's Kim Hyungjoo in the quarter-finals, after defeating China's Sun Yanan by technical superiority 8-2 in the 1/8 finals.
