Women's Hockey World Cup: India Ward Off Relentless Pressure To Hold England 1-1

In India's opening game of women's hockey world cup at London's Lee Valley, the women's hockey team held the hosts, world no.2 England, to a 1-1 draw. The match was played in a jam packed ground where Indian team surprised the hosts by taking a lead during 25th minute. NehaGoyal scored at the time despite the opponent's team casting exuberant support. England team earned as many as nine penalty corners during the game.

They were able to equalise the score by 54th minute when Lily Owsley scored, all thanks to delay in clearance by one of the Indian defenders. India didn't earn even a single penalty corner during the whole match. England's team dominated the match at most times and the pressure was quite high in the last 15 minutes. This led to one of the tournament's favorite in garnering a point which otherwise would have been a big disappointment on the opening day of the world cup itself. Before the equaliser goals, the closest England's team came to scoring was during their sixth penalty corner. But SunitaLakra saved in-time to keep our team at front. The hosts finally geared up to the crowd's chanting of 'Let's go, England!' India plays their next match against Ireland in a Pool B Match on 26th July 2018.
