World’s Largest Island

If you were ever asked, which is the world’s largest island, what would be your answer? Australia? The world’s largest island is Greenland and Australia is considered as a continent. Greenland is a self-determined country within the kingdom of Denmark. Greenland covers a total area of 2,175,597 km with a mere population of 56,452.
Greenland’s 85% of population is Inuit and the remaining population is mostly Danish. Rules in Denmark were inaugurated in 18th century. In 2008, Greenland transferred more power to local Government. The Danish Royal Government has all the authorities regarding security, foreign affairs, providing subsidy to the citizens and all the financial policies.
Greenland shares its border with Atlantic Ocean to the Southeast, Baffin Bay to the west, and Greenland Sea to the east and Arctic Ocean to the north. Greenland has its very own National park which is considered as the largest National Park in the whole world. Scientist are researching for decades that if there are three different islands covered by ice sheet and bridged by it as ice sheet covers a total area of 1,755,637 square km and it has a total volume of 2,850,000 cubic km.
The annual temperature of Greenland was recorded between 7˚Celsius to -9˚ Celsius. The climate researcher drilled the ice sheets deep and observed a 3 km long ice cores from 1989 to 1993. Study of chemical composition and layering has granted the new record of change in climate and going back 100,000 years.
Gunnbjorn Fjeld is considered as the highest point in Greenland at a height of 3,700 m. the north most part of the Greenland is Cape Morris Jesup and it was discovered by Robert Peary in 1900, who was an American explorer and he served his nation as a navy officer.
Glacier of Greenland also contributes in the rise of global sea level at a faster rate as it was measured previously.
