Agriculture in Andhra Pradesh is one of the most important aspects when we discuss about economy in the state. Nearly 70% of the population completely depends on agriculture in the state. In the last two decades (1994-2014) government of AP has conquered many major issues which hindered in richness of the state: from 1994-2004, growing water scarcity and degrading natural resources were the two main problems, to conquer them Neeru- Meeru programme (for conservation of water) and AP WALTA Act (Water, Land and Trees Act 2002) to relieve de-silting of tanks are launched by the government. Also, several institutional reforms like Rythu Mithra Groups which imparts education for achieving max. AP stands second in the country in silk production. Sericulture promotes rural poor because of its low requirement of capital and higher returns. From 2004 to 2014 many issues like reduction in mulberry acreage, the financial condition of the farmers, stagnant productivity and failure in extension of new technologies were noticed. To overcome these, steps like increasing cropped area production and productivity, installing of solar energy lighting & cooling systems, irrigation pump sets to help mulberry cultivation and establishment of reeling cocoon & raw silk processing units are started.
Agricultural Marketing plays the most vital role and includes the assessment of demand for farm-inputs and their supply, post-harvest handling of farm products and many more things. Rythu Bazars, Rythu Mithra, Cold Storage Units and Gramin Bhandaran Yojana were the main programmes which enacted from 1994-2004, various obstacles related to them came up in 2004-2014, but steps to overcome them are now taken.
