Maghi Purnima marks the full moon day and the conclusion of the month of Magh. According to the Hindu calendar, Magh is one of the most sacred months. In the beginning of this month, the sun sets on its northern path. Purnima or full moon day holds a lot of significance in Hindu legends. It is considered an auspicious day to perform religious activities and rituals.
Magh corresponds to the months of January-February. In this month, the two famous fares Kumbha Mela and Magha Mela are held. Kumbh Mela is held once in every 12 years whereas Magha Mela is held annually. People from all over the country throng these fares. Millions of devotees perform the ritualistic bath at the Triveni Sangam (a confluence of three rivers) in Prayag, Allahabad.
According to the Hindu mythology, Lord Vishnu resides in river Ganga on Maghi Purnima. Thus, by taking a dip in the holy water one can attain salvation. Devotees also observe the Maghi Purnima vrat (fast) and worship Lord Vishnu. It is believed that one can gain freedom from his sins by piously bathing in any of the sacred rivers like Ganga, Saraswati and Yamuna on Maghi Purnim.
This day encourages people to connect with God, be charitable and find peace. It helps society to contribute to humanity.
