Milind Soman, supermodel-turned-actor and sports enthusiast feel that when youngsters are increasingly getting involved in political violence, promoting a culture of sports can help to fight against the situation, in these polarized times of socio-politically.
Milind told IANS, that Sports are a very positive outlet to utilize your energy. It helps you build a mind and healthy body, and also benefit in our spiritual growth through discipline. It is a great engagement for youngsters. No one can radicalize you easily, when once you have a healthy mind. Children who are getting brainwashed by the negative influence can be protected.
That is why he believes that this is high time we bring the sports culture and make it popular among kids to build a progressive nation.
Talking about the discipline, he had mentioned earlier in one of the chapters of his book, that how a 10-year-old boy had changed himself by visiting (RSS) Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh daily for a year. As RSS focuses on discipline in every member, for becoming responsible citizens it is also opposite to the present image of the body.
Milind feels outlook needs to be changed in the sports area. As the only sports to be celebrated in India are cricket, there is no glamorous for the person who becomes an athlete.
He thinks that the problem is, whenever we learn a skill, we look forward to the commercial benefits and this is the reason why people look at sports as a risky career as sports have a short span, for a cricketer or a football player. And this is not how sports should be. One should play sports who excels in it rather than focusing on commercial benefits. One doesn't need to always get into competitive sports.
Whether it is modeling, swimming, acting or marathon running, Milind has always pushed the limits. He says success never made him complacent. Therefore, he did not stop exploring things that were new to him. When he started modeling, he did not even know that it could be a profession. When he did his first marathon, his idea was to do it just one time. Then he got hooked to it and ever since he is running the marathon, and now he has become a part of the fitness movement over the last 17 years.
Milind also represented Maharashtra at the National level in swimming.
