The Fearless Indian Mountaineer: Arunima Sinha
Editorials News | May-10-2018
Life is 10% what happens to you and 90% how you react to it. Arunima Sinha, first Indian female amputee to climb the Everest is an inspiration for the nation. She aimed at climbing all the highest peaks of the seven continents and already she has achieved success for six among them. Everest in Asia, Kilimanjaro in Africa, Elbrus in Europe, Kosciuszko in Australia, Aconcagua in Argentina and Carstensz Pyramid (Puncak Jaya) in Indonesia.
Arunima was doing well in volley ball and she wanted to pursue it as a career. But destiny had some other plans. She met with a tragic accident in 2011, when a group of robbers pushed her out from a running train while trying to snatch her golden chain. The whole night she was left alone in the track and more than 49 trains moved over her leg, leaving her helpless.
But Arunima could not console herself taking pity or sympathy from the world. This time she aimed for something that seems to be unachievable. Here, there is no scope for mistakes. Being inspired by cancer survivor cricketer, Yuvraj Singh, she went to seek advice from first Indian female Mount Everest winner Bachendri Pal. Now there was no looking back. She started her training immediately, and finally after two years of undaunted training, finally reached Everest on 21 May 2013.
