A School Field Trip

As teachers, an excursion is one of the simplest tools that we will use to supply every student with real-world experiences. Whether that's a visit to the local grocery, waterfront park, a library, a museum, a theatre, a community garden, or a restaurant, each experience that a student participates in contributes to their understanding of the planet.

When students leave the classroom, they see the connections between what's happening at college and within the ‘real-world’.They start to ascertain that what they learn within the walls of the classroom can help them solve the issues they see within the world around them and may have an immediate impact on who they become as people.

Students are ready to access tools and environments that aren't available at college. Our communities are rich in learning laboratories. Field trips make it possible to require students to ascertain an underwater ecosystem at an aquarium, participate in citizen science during a river, use high-powered microscopes, see and touch historical artifacts face to face and present on a public stage among many other things. Each experience solidifies learning and supports important academic concepts.

Students who continue field trips become more empathetic and tolerant. A study conducted by the University of Arkansas found that students that participate during an excursion to an art museum show increased empathy, tolerance, and important thinking skills. Studying art allows students to believe a subject or theme from a special perspective.
