Impact Of COVID-19 On Sports Activities

Since the beginning of this pandemic, the sports industry has been adversely affected. Sports are considered a big contributor to economic and social development. The COVID-19 has been an issue for almost all countries of the world including India. Social and physical distancing measures, shutdowns of schools, and also disrupted many regular aspects of life, including sports activities. This is a challenge imposed by COVID-19 on both the sporting world and another physical activity world. Due to the government orders, it is not possible to support the safe reopening of sporting events, as well as to support physical activity during the pandemic. To safeguard the health of sportsperson and other involved staff members, most major sporting events at international, regional, and national levels have been canceled or postponed – from marathons to football tournaments, athletics championships to basketball games, weightlifting to wrestling, and more. It is the point to note that the Olympics and Paralympics have been postponed for the first time in the history of the modern games.

The sudden closure of educational institutions around our country due to COVID-19 has impacted the sports education sector, which is comprised of a broad range of stakeholders, including local authorities as well as national ministries, private and public education institutions, NGOs, athletes, and sports organizations, and the teachers, business community, scholars and coaches, parents and, first and foremost, the – mostly young – learners. Although this community has been severely impacted by the pandemic, it can also be a key contributor to solutions to contain and overcome it, as well as in promoting rights and values in times of social distancing. As the world is still trying to recover from COVID-19, there will be significant issues to be addressed to ensure the safety of sporting events at all levels and the well-being of sporting organizations. We have to be ready to reboot the sports industry again when the situation comes under control.
