Representation of Indian Women in Sports

Earlier, the role of women in sports was limited, but today, our women athletes across all fields do justice to the country. Some of them include P. T. Usha in the track and field events, Karnam Malleswari in weight lifting, and more recently, Sania Mirza in Tennis. It is evident that many young girls in India look up to successful female athletes as role models. Besides motivating future athletes, their victories alter the public perception of what women can accomplish in sports.

Athletes like Mirza have encouraged many Indian women to take up various sports across different levels of competition. Government and non-government organizations and private organizations have also played an important role in increasing women’s sports activities like Saina Nehwal, PV Sindhu in badminton, Mary Kom in boxing, Anjali Bhagwat, Heena Sidhu in shooting, etc. These feats have not only put India on the sporting map but have also brought out the potential and passion of Indian women across various fields. Some of the athletes, like – Saina Nehwal received different awards from our Government, like the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award, Padma Shri, Arjuna Award, etc. In Wrestling, Sakshi Malik won a Bronze medal in the Rio Olympics and set our nation on a high note. Sania Mirza in Tennis got the Padma Shri and Arjuna Award, and Mira Bai Chanu also got a Gold medal for India in the Olympic Games. These are those women who our entire nation is proud of, and because of this, our government started pampering women who, in turn, represent our Country at the Global level.
