Women And Sports
General News | Feb-11-2021
Women have excelled in every field. The 21st century has brought many positive changes for women. Many people now believe the potential is not related to gender. Women in the 21st century are now participating in many activities and giving social stereotypes and prejudices a heavy fight, defeating them and rising to the top. In India itself, we have now battalions of women in our military and air force. Their contribution to our nation's security is also quite admirable. More and more women are becoming independent now, this wave should not stop until it hits every female. This century has also proved that women can also do wonders in sports. From cricket to soccer, from wrestling to boxing, women have amazing performance and skills in sports.
Barriers
-
Stereotypes: Women are weak, they don't have that potential, they are not fast, they don't have that body, this is for boys not for girls, etc these are some common lines we all hear for women who try to indulge in sports.
-
Family Limitations: India has a male-dominated society and this runs in our family decisions also. Women face all kinds of oppression from men in the families. They need an allowance for every decision they make. Girls don't have independence for their decisions.
-
Bad Elements: There are tons of bad elements in our country. Eve teasing, threats, rape culture, are the criminal obstacles that make them feel unsafe and this doesn't allow them to work for their dreams freely.
Women to this date face atrocities and social discrimination. Human civilization has only seen women as the weaker section of society and has always tried to overpower them. Every right we enjoy today was barred for women. India got its independence in 1947 but for women, it was still a long journey. Many sections of Indian society still don't believe women to be equal to men. This stereotypical thinking also limits their professional paths and thus hinders in their journey of self-dependency. Women in sports have not only revolutionized the way we think about them in sports but also made it possible to rethink the whole sports male dominance making new ways for their professional career.
Many countries have developed new ways to promote the participation of women in sports. Sports scholarships, Quotas reserved for women related to sports, benefits for women are raised significantly in sports. This has encouraged and given a stereotype of a setback. Parents are also trying to indulge their daughters in sports.
