San Fermin Festival - Everything You Need to Know




San Fermin Festival is celebrated annually from 6-14 July in commemoration of the Pamplona's first bishop and patron saint, Saint Fermin. It is held in Pamplona, Spain. It begins at noon on July 6 and ends at midnight on July 14. Till 1592, the festival was originally observed on September 25 which was the Saint Fermin's feast day. It was then moved to July. The festival has grown so much in popularity that it has come to be known as the most internationally popular and renowned fiesta in Spain. Around 1,000,000 people from all around the world participate in the festival.

Running of the bulls or encierro is the most famous event of the festival. A lot of people come to participate in this event. It involves an attempt to outrun the bulls along a route that passes through the narrow routes of the old city. The event was made famous by Ernest Hemingway's novel released in 1926 named The Sun Also Rises. The bullfight is held every afternoon. Some other daily events include bullfights, fireworks, traditional sports such as stone lifting, wood cutting etc. Some one day events that are treat to the eyes are Chupinazo (rocket is launched on order to mark the opening of the festival), Pobre de Mi (candlelit ending to the end of the festival) etc.
