Mental Health is one of the most discussed topics of today’s era and why not as we all somewhere or the other faces this in our phase of life. Fast and hectic lifestyles are no more monotonous and boring and more and more people especially the youth is now looking for new interventions which may also result in failures and then ultimately damage our mental health. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), it is reported that one person commits suicide every 40 seconds.
Another Lancet report has stated that mental disorders are among the leading causes of non-fatal disease burden in India.
Some more figures also suggest that these reports predict that by 2021, roughly 20 per cent of our population will be facing mental health disorders.
Dr Samir Parikh who is a renowned psychiatrist and also director of the department of mental health and behavioural sciences at the Fortis National Mental Health program at Fortis Healthcare has shared 6 practical ways which if one inculcates can take care of his/her mental health.
STEP 1: CELEBRATE:
The first and most important thing is to celebrate. When we celebrate each and every success, also the smallest of it, this helps in building positivity and confidence so that one can approach the next year with the more of it.
STEP 2: ACCEPTING DIFFICULT TIMES
We all must know that if we have good times then bad times are also normal and we have to face them. These turbulences are common in lives of all and thus, accepting them as a part of life and more importantly realising that you have come out of it. Recognising what has helped you, supported you, is your own resilience and the strength lies in you.
STEP 3: INVESTING TIME IN RELATIONSHIPS
No matter how much we are occupied its always necessary to take out some personal time and invest it in building relationships, hectic lifestyle may hamper this but we should remember that nothing beats the importance of support systems. These support systems are a source of positivity in our lives.
STEP 4: DO NOT STOP ENJOYING LIFE
Problems goes on parallel with our lives. The best advice would be to take multiple breaks, so one can try taking short vacations regularly. During the course of the week also, try having some time for yourself, have some of the lighter days in between and enjoy yourself. Distracting negativity by indulging in different activities is a good option.
STEP 5: PRIORITISING MENTAL WELL BEING
We all have a habit of giving so much less importance to our well-being and our mental health and tend to give so much extra importance to everything else. Creating a balance of work life, healthy lifestyle, sense of joy, pleasure, cheerfulness and also family, will ultimately help you in giving more importance to mental well-being.
STEP 6: CONTINUING IN THE PATH OF SUCCESS
Being organized at work, being willing to take help, if you are a novice or study regularly if you are a student. If struggling, talk to a senior, a teacher, a colleague, a coach and feel free to reach out for help. If you are struggling at an emotional level, reach out to your friends. If the issue is yet not solved consult an expert. It’s a myth that seeking help is a sign of weakness. Following all this will definitely help you grow in life and career too.
